I got steam a few weeks ago and near the same time a virus, could steam have given me a virus???

Steam doesn't give viruses.
It is possible, however, that it uses a file which your antivirus sees as a threat...

Aye. Did you have any of the actual signs of a virus (slow performance, popups or other ads, redirected webpages, locked-out system functions like ctrl-al-del), or did your antivirus just flag the Steam exe? If the former, it was in something else you downloaded; if the latter, find a new antivirus...

it didn't just red flag it it was a virus. but I think it was something I got near that time.
